Is a train engine more powerful or an airplane engine more powerful?
Is a train engine more powerful or an airplane engine more powerful?
Comparing the engine of a train and the engine of a plane is the same as comparing a car's engine to a train.
For example, the world's most powerful train engine is China's HXD1G with a power of 15,000 hp.
A plane engine is a jet engine. The power of a jet engine is measured by the thrust generated from the hp or the horsepower. The world's most powerful jet engine by this scale is General Electric's GE90 used in the Boeing 777. This jet engine produces a thrust of 569 kN which is a record.

The power of airplane thrust can be easily estimated by looking at this picture. It can easily blow one to one and a half ton car. And the jet engine shown in the picture is also not the most powerful jet engine.
*But can the force of 569kN be compared to the power of 15000 hp?
Turning the thrust of a jet engine into horsepower is a bit complicated because it requires accurate information about the speed of the aircraft and how much force is at that speed. Since the force also changes with speed all the time, so the horsepower of the jet engine also changes.
But GE has changed its jet engine to a gas turbine LM9000 which is used for power generation. The maximum output power of the converted turbine is 75 MW i.e. approximately 1,01,000 hp. So the horsepower capacity of that jet engine can be considered around it. So comparing 15000hp to about 1 lakh hp is not right.
The horsepower of this one jet engine is approximately equal to the 7 most powerful train engines. The engine fitted to the Boeing 747 (the younger brother of the Boeing 777) also produces around 70,000 horsepower. A fighter jet engine also produces 30 to 35 thousand horsepower.
So it would not be wrong to say that a plane engine is more powerful than a train engine.
